Current Obsessions Fall 2007

1. Pad Thai

I had this internship a few years back and it was the best job ever. I made my own schedule, filed things, made spreadsheets, had my own cubicle that I decorated (movie posters, framed photographs, magnets, stickers, etc.), surfed the web for approx. three hours every day and hung out in other people’s cubes (office slang for cubicle, I learned). I took secret naps in the filing room with my radio blaring Drew & Mike at roughly 10am every Wednesday. I played Frisbee with discarded CDs from old files. It was fun, I’d toss them into this big recycle bin from as far away as possible. I got really good. But that skill has probably faded and is clearly worth nothing.

But the absolute best part of that job was that I never punched a clock, so my lunches were epic. They were two hours, minimum. Add up, time spent filing/doing actual work (2 hours), time napping (1/2 hour, sometimes more), time surfing the web (3 hours) and my epic lunches (2 hours min.), it was the BEST job. Ever. I loved it. I mean I hated it, cause I had to wear nice clothes everyday and wake up at 6am, and then I had to deal with some socially retarded corporate America people. But really, I loved it.

Back to the lunches. I started my mornings planning for my lunch break. I would get someone to agree to go and then spend roughly half the morning emailing back and forth deciding on a place to go. Everyone would always say, “let’s get thai!!”

And I would say, “no thanks.” Because I hate Chinese food and just assumed it would make me wanna vom in the same way. So, I never tried it, but always lied and said I had. Clearly, I was an idiot. I finally tried it a few months ago and it changed my life. It is the most delicious food ever. It sometimes makes my stomach do flip flops and it makes my nose run. But it’s totally worth it.

I eat it an average of 3-4 times a week. I cannot get enough. I mean I’ll burn out pretty soon, because I always do that with a food I become obsessed with (ex: silk pie blizzard, chicken pot pie, cookies & cream bars, ice cream sandwiches, snack wraps, chicken patty sandwiches, ect.). But for now, I’m enjoying the ride.

2. Radiohead “In Rainbows”

For real, I am so in love with their new album. I have always loved Radiohead and it makes me all kind of happy to know that they’re still rocking my world with new shit. If you haven’t heard their new shit yet, get on it immediately. Trust me.

3. Coughing

With this one, I just seem like I’m obsessed with it, since I can’t seem to stop. This cold will be the death of me, for real. I cough from the moment I wake up until the moment I go to sleep. And it’s not some wimpy ass tickle in my throat cough. It’s deep and urgent and comes from the depths of my lungs. It sounds awful. I wind up with a breath that I took too heavy on accident and then heave. I can feel it shaking me and for a second I’m not sure if I’ll breath again. I just kind of assume (hope) I will.

4. The L Word Season 5 Promo

The new season starts in January and I am already super excited, which is ridiculous since I hate the show a lot too. But really, I love it more I think. It’s one of those, it’s so bad it’s good kind of things. The writing is so bad sometimes, it makes me want to kick the creator. That woman is a tard. For real. Some of the shit she tries to pass off as “writing” is laughable. Sometimes everyone speaks their subtext and I shake me head, like, “I know people are dumb, but come ON.”

I was at the opera the other night and some of the dialogue was so horrible. I felt a little bit like I was watching The L Word in French.

But I’m still crazy excited for the show to make it’s glorious return. And if you haven’t checked out the promo for season 5, do it now.

5. Wasting Time

I am so good at wasting time, I wish I got paid for it. Like, right now, writing this, I am wasting time. But I’m impulsive like a baby sometimes and I do whatever when the mood strikes me. I’ve always been like that. Most people think I have ADD, but really, I just don’t know how to ignore an impulse sometimes. It has been known to get me into trouble on more than one occasion. Maybe I’ll learn one day. Probably not.

6. Riese’s Blog

It’s been a couple years since I first discovered a really great blog. I check it religiously. It’s funny and smart and honest and so human, and just….good. I love it. She also does recaps for The L Word, which are hilarious. Check it out if you ever get the time.

7. Being A Bad Influence

I’ve been doing this forever. I don’t ruin people’s lives or anything, but being around me for extended periods of time can be dangerous. I tend to rub off on people, fucking up their sleep patterns, sharing cloves, being late, being impulsive creatively, staying out too late, drinking more than usual/going out “too much”, losing sight of priorities, etc. Basically, I am the coolest person ever. But at what cost?

8. Cheese Fries

There’s this Coney Island near my apt. that’s open 24 hours, which means that I can get cheese fries whenever the mood strikes me, and it usually does around 3am on any give night of the week when I’m rolling in from the bar or a night at a friend’s apt. Cheese fries rock my world. For real.

9. Covers of “Umbrella”

I have no idea why I’m so obsessed, but I am. And I’m kind of obsessed with other covers too, like the Snow Patrol and Switchfoot covers of “Crazy In Love”.

My favorite cover of “Umbrella” is probably a tie between the one Mandy Moore did and the one that I just heard by Tegan and Sara. Brilliance. I love this song.

The Mandy Moore version is romantic and sweet and really enhances the sentiment. It’s like a big fleece throw blanket, soft and warm and lovely. I don’t even really like Mandy Moore, but she made this song beautiful and I love her for it.

Tegan and Sara cover: http://hypem.com/track/399558

The Tegan and Sara cover is more rock, sexier, kind of like Tegan and Sara in comparison to Mandy Moore. Haha. But seriously, their cover rocks. I love it. It’s a live version and the sound quality isn’t the best, but I still think it’s pretty great.

10. The Fighting Couple

There’s this couple that live in my building and they stage epic fights at any hour of the day/night. They are so unbelievably loud and yet I can barely gather what they’re battles are about. Their words are all unintelligible, just vowels with no sign of consonants or punctuation. They’re insane.

The first time I heard them was in the early evening a few months ago. The first sound I heard was the woman yelling like a dying wild animal from her third story window. There were bursts of yelling through her heavy, panicked sobs. Then, the voice of a man standing in the courtyard. Him, I can understand, “BABY! OPEN THE DOOR!” Then more yelling from her. “BABY, LET UP! WE CAN TALK ABOUT THIS!” Silence and then more yelling from her, this time, much more urgent, like she would’ve thrown something if she weren’t so hysterical.

The man threw his arms into the air, outstretched, offering up his best plea, “BABY! BABY! SHE MEANT NOTHING!”

I love this couple.
